How does the body regulate pH?

BODY PH.jpg

The body tightly regulates pH levels through; blood buffers, kidneys and breathing through out lungs. When we breathe out air, we breath out acidic carbon dioxide, this helps to regulate blood acidity levels. Besides you wouldn’t want the body to change pH that easily, because your cells would die. If they die, you die. Pretty simple.

Changing the pH level of the body is actually a sign of something seriously wrong with your health. This is a life threatening hospitalisation scenario where you are in big trouble. Examples where you would see this is; in cancer patients due to chemotherapy treatment or ketoacidosis in Type 1 diabetics, with very poor management.

Now the science behind the diet maybe be rubbish, but the diet isn’t all that bad. I am all for diets that promote more fruit and veg consumption and the alkaline diet does promote a healthy consumption of the two.

Increased fruit and vegetable consumption have been shown to have positive impacts on mental health, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, cancer and heart disease;  And of course we all know they are jam packed with minerals and vitamins. We need micronutrients for good cellular function, growth and repair. See all positive!

Although, I think the premise behind the diet is nonsense, the diet isn’t that bad. You might want to take the key message about eating more fruit and veg and run with it. Make your own plant based diet.
